Now Hiring: Fintech Analyst (Part-Time Remote)
24 July 2019
Assignment: Analyst, Fintech
Type: Consultant, Part time
MIX is the leading global data resource for socially responsible investors and businesses focused on inclusive finance. MIX’s data platform covers thousands of mission-focused financial service providers in more than 100 developing markets. MIX collects, analyzes, and maintains data on financial services providers. The data are shared both as a public good for the advancement of the industry and on a fee-paid basis for subscribers interested in more detailed market intelligence. MIX helps socially responsible investors who move 10 billion USD annually to monitor their portfolios and increase their investments in underserved sectors and geographies, including agricultural finance, clean energy finance and inclusive fintech. Founded in 2002, MIX has data analysts in every region of the world.
Digital financial services and fintech are quickly changing the landscape of financial services and having a significant impact on financial inclusion. Despite these rapid advances, investors, funders and market supporters lack the visibility necessary to support healthy growth of the fintech market. Visibility, via trusted sources of information, allows funders and investors to discover partners and investees, and common standards and definitions allow funders and investors to compare potential investments. Trusted sources of comparable information are a pre-condition for capital to flow. Currently, the industry lacks a standardized approach to defining what fintech is, let alone aggregating and analyzing relevant data. This serves as a tremendous barrier to increased investment in and growth of the fintech sector.
MIX is addressing these information constraints by building data standards to create a common language for fintechs and through data initiatives to address the information gap. These initiatives include the Inclusive Fintech 50, a competition to identify early stage, inclusive fintechs, and the development of a data hub to connect investors, fintechs and ecosystem actors through information solutions.
MIX is seeking an analyst for a project to develop fintech benchmarks. These benchmarks are based on the MIX’s fintech data standards that have undergone expert review and a public comment period and are now ready to test on a select set of fintechs. They will draw on the experience of the Inclusive Fintech 50 to build out a first-of-its-kind set of benchmarks to paint a picture of the landscape of fintechs and their performance.
The analyst will be responsible for end-to-end data collection, review and analysis will be expected to:
- Build out the data collection templates and database for fintech data
- Run the data collection, including interacting with fintechs to collect, review and finalize the data
- Analyze the data to highlight key insights for investor and fintechs
- Create the initial benchmarks to be released in a public benchmark report
- Develop individual benchmark reports for participating fintechs
To accomplish the above responsibilities, a strong analyst candidate would have the following knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Survey creation, particularly in designing survey instruments for complete, accurate data collection
- Data management, including building business rules for data review and transformation
- Data analysis, including statistical analysis to create meaningful aggregate benchmarks
- Data presentation for communicating results to intended data users in ways that support their own goals
- Solid understanding of digital financial services and fintechs
- Cross-functional communications, to liaise effectively with team members in pursuit of your project goals
Level of effort
The analyst is expected to work on this assignment for approximately 64 days over a four-month period starting in August 2019.
MIX is a global organization with analyst teams located in India, Senegal, Peru and Azerbaijan and functional teams located in New York, Washington DC, California and Paris. MIX’s work culture supports and encourages working with teams from multiple locations. For this analyst role, it would be an advantage for this person to be based in New York, Washington, DC or in Europe.
The practice lead will report to MIX’s Fintech Lead for overall project outcomes, and will collaborate with MIX’s COO and MIX’s Inclusive Fintech 50 Lead for operationalizing the data collection and benchmarks, MIX’s CEO for strategic direction, and MIX’s Director of Marketing and Communications for fintech and project communication and awareness.
Interested consultants should send a cover letter (clearly stating the candidate’s experience) and resume to firstname.lastname@example.org, along with at least one sample of an analytical report. MIX will be interviewing candidates on a rolling basis with a tentative assignment start date of 05-Aug-19.
