Microfinance Reporting Standards

Microfinance is a diverse and fragmented global industry. Due to its very nature, operating in different regions and countries under a variety of regulations and laws, no standardization body exists for it.

MIX works with other leading organizations in developing industry best practices and standards, and is actively helping to define financial and social performance reporting standards. In this respect MIX works closely with the Small Enterprise Education and Promotion (SEEP) Network and the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) as well as a number of other institutions.

Core competencies of MIX’s role in best practices and industry standardization efforts lie in accounting, financial analysis, and benchmarking process.

Over the years, MIX has proven to be a key contributor to the development of a number of financial performance standards, endorsed by a wide range of microfinance stakeholders.

MIX is also a key contributor to the development of the social performance report, through participation in the Social Performance Task Force and by our efforts at leading the collection and analysis of the social performance indicators from reporting MFIs.

Additionally, MIX has developed and implemented technology standards specific to microfinance institutions, creating a taxonomy using XBRL that will allow MFIs to report to a variety of organizations without increasing their burden.
