Latin American and the Caribbean Microfinance Market Trends 2005-2010
MIX presents the “2005-2010 Trends for the Latin American and the Caribbean microfinance market”, an update to the trend report published in May 2010. This report shows the region’s performance based on a variety of indicators in categories such as outreach, growth, credit types, financial structure, and profitability and risk. The data was compiled from a sample of the 47 largest Latin America and the Caribbean MFIs, which cover more than 57% of the clients in the region.
Our analysis shows microfinance activity continues to grow in the number of clients served as well as portfolio size and number of deposits; however, the rate of growth is not equal throughout the region. Mexico and South America grew rapidly while growth in Central America and the Caribbean moved at a slower rate. Additionally, the region saw a reduction in portfolio risk due to economic recovery efforts and write-offs resulting in slightly increased profitability levels.
