According to the report, the commercial financial sector in the region continued to influence the performance and growth of microfinance institutions in the region in many ways, a relationship that is expected to deepen over time as the local financial markets continue to develop.

The report shows that growth has been strongest for banks with several microfinance banks now ranking among the leading financial institutions in their countries. Due to their higher loan balances and generally stable performance, ECA MFIs have also seen rapid growth in external investment to the sector.
