2001 Bosnia and Herzegovina Microfinance Case Study

Given the increased demand for microcredit, the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been supporting the microfinance industry through a number of measures: investing government funds in the sector, including microfinance as a key part of their development strategy, and adopting legislation to legalize the provision of microcredit by NGOs35. Microfinance in the country is evolving quickly. As of March 2000, there were 18 main MFIs in Bosnia- Herzegovina, down from 34 in 1999. This article focuses on eight MFIs that represent a range in terms of both target clientele and performance: AMK, Bospo, LOK, MEB, Mercy Corps/Partner36, Mikrofin, Sunrise, and World Vision.
