With more than a billion dollars of outside investment pouring in each year, it might seem out of place to question the future of microfinance. Yet it is at times such as these, when an industry is riding the crest of a wave, that prudent folk begin to ask awkward questions. Can this industry really deliver on its promises with so much now riding on it?
An exploration of the risks in microfinance has just been completed to answer some of these questions and provide pointers to what might happen next. It is called Microfinance Banana Skins 2008, and the banana skins are the slippery objects that lie in microfinance’s path.
