Date:
Mar 3, 2010

The microfinance sector in Kosovo has been operating since 1999, and most microfinance institutions (MFIs) there started as economic development programs of international humanitarian organizations.

Currently there are 14 microfinance institutions operating mainly in rural areas, representing 18 percent of the financial sector in terms of number of loans and 7 percent in total loan amount. These figures indicate an overall large number of loans provided in small amounts by MFIs in Kosovo.

This report, produced by MIX and the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Kosovo (AMIK), analyzes developments in the legal and regulatory environment and financial performance of microfinance in Kosovo and includes benchmarks comparing 7 MFIs in Kosovo to regional peers.
