2008 Africa Microfinance Analysis and Benchmarking Report
In 2007, sub-Saharan Africa experienced encouraging economic growth of 6.7 percent and continued to accelerate progress in human development, improve infrastructure, and strengthen the policy environment. Africa also received renewed attention from the private sector, funders, domestic and international investors, and development agencies. Microfinance has been able to capitalize on these positive developments, experiencing strong growth in 2007.
Given the diversity of experience in the Africa region, this report reviews overall developments throughout Africa and separate breakdowns for each of the four subregions: Central, East, Southern, and West Africa. This report analyzes the development of the microfinance field, focusing on the key growth trends, the national and regional regulatory environments, funding flows and structure, and performance of microfinance institutions.
Produced by MIX and CGAP, the report provides analysis for the microfinance sector in sub-Saharan Africa, using data on 160 microfinance institutions to benchmark performance, and 111 MFIs for three year trend data.
