MIX’s Lead Researcher to present his paper, “Is Microfinance Growing too Fast?” on June 18th at Inter-American Development Bank

Adrián González's most recent paper sheds important empirical light on the debate concerning microfinance industry growth vs. portfolio quality

Recently, it has been suggested that country-wide deterioration of the MFI portfolio in countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Nicaragua and Pakistan is associated with uncontrolled growth in the microfinance sector.

Adrián González, Lead Researcher at the Microfinance Information Exchange, is to present a Brown Bag Lunch on his recent paper, Data Brief No. 5: Is Microfinance Growing too Fast?, which addresses the relevance of a strictly growth-centered analysis for understanding MFI portfolio quality. The presentation, which will be delivered in Spanish, is being hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Specifics to be discussed include:

  • The estimation of critical thresholds at which the growth rate may begin to negatively impact portfolio quality
  • Growth strategy and its impact on portfolio quality (local growth versus expansive growth)
  • Alternative explanations of country context, including penetration rates and aggregate growth rates, and their relationship with portfolio deterioration

Data Brief No. 5 will be available to download from MIX's website next week.
