Making Strides in Social Performance Reporting and Recognition

Reporting on Social Performance to MIX

In April, MIX initiated a new round of social performance data collection. Within two months, over 100 microfinance institutions (MFIs) have already submitted their social performance information to MIX, demonstrating the industry's increasing commitment to integrating social performance into management and to tracking this information. The Social Performance (SP) Report templates are available in multiple languages on MIX's website at: www.themix.org/standards/sp-reports. MFIs already registered on MIX Market can **submit the completed SP Report via MIX Market until September 30, 2010**.

Awarding Social Performance Reporting

CGAP, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and the Ford Foundation established a Social Performance Reporting Award in 2009 to promote transparency among MFIs. Conferred by MIX, the award recognizes openness and accountability in reporting, rather than the actual performance of MFIs on the reported measures. Thirteen MFIs already received the award this year during the MFC Annual Conference in Astana on May 27.

This year, the Inter-American Development Bank is sponsoring the Inter-American Awards for Microenterprise Development 2010. Included among these is a monetary award, sponsored by the Citi Foundation, for MFIs in Latin American and the Caribbean for Best Practices in Social Performance. One of the requirements to be considered for the award is to **submit the 2009 SP Report to MIX by the end of June**.

Upcoming Publications on Social Performance

MIX is currently working with _IMP-ACT_ Consortium to produce a publication on the **Status of Practice in Social Performance Reporting and Management**, which is expected to be **released by the end of July**. The report draws on three sources of information: social performance data reported by MFIs to MIX in the year 2009, a Social Performance Management (SPM) learning program coordinated by _IMP-ACT_ Consortium, and a qualitative survey conducted among rating agencies, supporting agencies, and MFI networks.

MIX has recently conducted an analysis of the correlations and trade-offs between financial and social outcomes of the 208 MFIs that reported information to MIX last year. An outline of the research can be found on MIX's Social Performance Indicators Blog.
